Gutsey Ambassador: Julien Yamba, trail runner, outdoor enthusiast, father

Carrie Forbes Ambassador athlete canada

Where were you born? Where do you live now?

I was born in 1987 in La Roche sur Yon, France. I live in Quebec City (QC) since 2011.

Tell us a little about yourself, your hobbies, things you love.

Passionate about sports since I was young, I rediscovered the outdoors in Quebec; hiking, skiing, climbing, then off-piste skiing, ice climbing, trail running or mountaineering... are all ways that I like to play to move in nature and reach the top of the (my) Inner mountain!

In the fall of 2015, before the birth of my son, I had a click on my practice "leisure", and I decided to take charge and train hard to achieve new goals To summarize, I am a mountain enthusiast who likes to play in the countryside, with different means of locomotion, depending on the season.

Tell us about any accomplishments you have received over the years and/or goals you are trying to achieve.

I want to become a better person, both human and sports. I like to run, discover new places, and as much as possible, perform. To run around the world and to be well represented on races, more and more prestigious. Here are some results and achievements of which I am particularly proud: 2017 : - 1st, Défi Bleu - TransMartinique (58k - 1650D+) - 3rd, Trail du Grand-Duc (48k - 2500D+) - 2nd, Lac-Kénogami 50 (49k - 2500D+) - Coaching of several athletes who start in running 2016: - 3rd, Trail de la Clinique beauport (30k - 1500D+) - 2nd Titans des Montagnes (31k - 2750D+) - 1st, GP Montmorency nocturne (10k - 300D+) - Mount Washington, 1916m, New Hampshire (alpine ascension by Central Gully, January) - Acadia National Park Tour (trailrunning, 54k, 2500md +, 07:30) 2015 - Mount Hood, 3429m Oregon (alpine style ascent and ski descent (solo, 9:30 am, June 21st); 2014 - Crossing the Zec des Martres (hiking, 60k - 3 days); 2013 - Crossing the Jacques-Cartier National Park (trek in the backcountry solo, 60k - 4 days).

Why do you think you live a GutseyLife?

The values of surpassing oneself, becoming a better person and taking the concrete actions to get there are all tasks that inspire me and that I try to apply on a daily basis. Discovering new people, new places, countries or horizons are also aspects that I keep as motivation, to always go forward. "Living your dreams, one step at a time" is the quote that defines me and that I repeat myself in difficult times.

How do you want to help/inspire others?

I would like to help or inspire others to allow them to take advantage of the inner potential within each of us. I think that the biggest obstacles are often inside ourselves (lack of self-confidence, knowledge of one's abilities). Beyond these concepts, I apply myself to share my passion, my training, races or other achievements. Converge friends on my outings, participate in group training are all vectors to try to pass on his passion to others.

Julien will be participating in the following U.S. races for 2018

  • January 27th: Mr W. OTTO RHOD (ski-mountaineering - ascent of Mount Washington)
  • May 5th: Peak Bloodroot Ultra (Trail - 48km / 1800D +, Pittsfield, VT)
  • May 21st (Patriots' Day) - Training Camps around Mount Washington (Presidential Traverse, Mount Washington Ascension)
